Lose a car key in the UK and the first thing you'll probably do is call the dealer. The second thing you'll probably do is put the phone down in shock. Dealer prices for car key replacement have climbed steeply — and most people don't realise there's a much cheaper option that does the same job.
Here's an honest breakdown of what car key replacement actually costs, what drives the price, and what you should expect to pay.

What Affects the Price?
1. Key type
The biggest factor. A basic flip key with a transponder chip is the most straightforward job. A proximity smart key — where the car detects the key in your pocket and unlocks automatically — requires more sophisticated programming equipment and typically costs more. Renault card keys and some European smart systems add another layer of complexity.
2. Whether you have a working key
Adding a spare is cheaper than all-keys-lost. When a working key is present, a locksmith can use it to authorise the new key. When all keys are gone, the immobiliser must be accessed at a lower level — often requiring PIN extraction or ECU interrogation. This takes longer and requires more specialist tools, which is reflected in the price.
This is the most important reason to get a spare key before you lose your only one.
3. Make and model
Volume brands (Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Nissan) are generally more affordable. German premium brands (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen) use more advanced immobiliser systems — especially post-2018 models — which require more sophisticated equipment. Prestige brands (Land Rover, Porsche, Lexus) are at the higher end.
4. Year
Newer vehicles use more advanced security. A 2010 Ford Focus key is a different proposition from a 2022 Ford Puma with a smart key and connected app integration. Generally, the newer the car, the more the key costs.
5. Mobile vs. dealer vs. generic locksmith
Dealers charge retail on parts and their standard workshop rates. An auto locksmith specialist carries the same quality key blanks and transponders, programs on-site (no recovery, no workshop), and typically charges 50–70% less. A generic locksmith who occasionally does car keys may not carry the right equipment for your vehicle — always check they cover your make and model specifically before booking.
All Keys Lost — What Changes?
If you've lost every key and have no spare, the process is more involved regardless of who does it. The immobiliser needs to be accessed directly, the existing key data cleared (or bypassed), and new keys written from scratch. This is a job that separates specialist auto locksmiths from general key cutters — read more about our all-keys-lost service.
We've completed all-keys-lost jobs on vehicles that other locksmiths couldn't do — including Renault card key systems and vehicles with damaged OBD ports.
How to Get the Best Price
- Don't call the dealer first. Get a quote from a specialist auto locksmith — you'll almost always save significantly.
- Have your registration ready. A locksmith can quote accurately if they know the exact vehicle — make, model, year, and engine size sometimes affects which transponder is fitted.
- Get a spare key now, not later. A spare key added today (when you have a working key) costs half what an all-keys-lost job costs tomorrow.
- Check coverage area. We cover Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and the wider Midlands — 24/7 with no call-out fee.
What About Insurance?
Some comprehensive motor insurance policies cover key replacement as an add-on. Check your policy — if it's covered, you may only pay an excess. That said, many excesses are higher than our prices, and making a claim affects your no-claims bonus. For most people, paying directly is still the better option unless the key cost is significant.
