A customer in Daventry called us after their Ford Transit 2016 refused to start. The key turned in the ignition but the engine wouldn't fire — a classic sign of an immobiliser fault. We diagnosed the problem as a faulty ignition transponder ring, replaced it on-site, and the van was running again the same day.
What Is an Ignition Transponder Ring?
Every modern car key contains a small transponder chip. When the key is inserted, the transponder ring — a loop aerial that sits around the ignition barrel — sends a signal to the key and reads back a security code. If that code matches what the immobiliser expects, the engine is allowed to start.
When the transponder ring fails — through wear, a break in the coil, or water damage — the immobiliser never receives a valid code and the car simply won't start, even with the correct key. The engine cranks but refuses to fire. Many people assume the key has failed, but in these cases the problem is the ring, not the key.
How We Diagnosed and Fixed It
We connected our diagnostic equipment to read the fault codes and confirmed the transponder ring was not communicating. We then removed the faulty ring, fitted a replacement, re-paired the system, and verified the van started reliably before leaving. The whole job was done at the roadside — no recovery truck, no dealer booking, no waiting days for parts.
