A customer in West Haddon, Northamptonshire wanted a spare key for their Audi A1 2017. A smart decision — the A1 is a popular and reliable compact car, but like most modern Audis it comes with only one key from the used car market. We came to the customer at home and had two working keys programmed and in their hands within the hour.
The Job
The 2017 Audi A1 (8X facelift) uses a VAG ID48 crypto transponder in a compact flip-key format. Adding a second key requires specialist VAG-compatible equipment to write the new transponder to the car's immobiliser alongside the existing key — without erasing the original.
We cut the new blade on-site and programmed the transponder using our VAG tools. Both keys tested — remote locking, engine start — before we left.
Why the Audi A1 Deserves a Spare Key
The A1 is often bought secondhand with a single key. For a car used daily — commuting, school runs, shopping — losing that one key means an immediate all-keys-lost call-out, which costs more and takes longer than simply adding a spare while the original is present. The price difference between "spare key today" and "all keys lost tomorrow" is significant.
We recommend adding a spare key the moment you buy any used car that comes with only one. We come to you, and the job takes less than an hour.
